I feel I have to write a post about how it all was but finding words to describe it is so hard. So, I shall try.
Sooo my friend and I were in the front row, albeit far to the side. Pretty good place to be. It did mean getting pushed around a lot, but that’s the price you pay, right? ;) The opening band (Gold Fields) weren’t bad, except their vocals were really quiet. Also, everyone was really impatient for Metric!!
They finally came on about 9.50 or so… and it must be said: Emily Haines’ legs.
I feel kind of bad that my lasting impression of “Artificial Nocturne” was mostly “damn, those are some fine legs.” BUT IT’S TRUE, I CAN’T DENY IT. They are entrancing. Oh man.
The good news is, I pulled myself together for the rest of the concert :P The setlist was the same as in Sydney, and speaking of which, the woman behind me was telling the story of how she’d seen Metric the previous night in Sydney, then had flown down to Melbourne for the specific purpose of seeing them again. That is dedication! Sounds kinda expensive though.
For me, the highlight of the concert was “Empty”, which was all extended and awesome. “Dead Disco” was also extended (obviously) so that was one of my friend’s highlights, but for me it was a bit of a let-down because it wasn’t as extended and awesome as the 15-minute version from Live at Metropolis. I know, I know, I set the bar unreasonably high.
I also liked the more singalongy songs. Belting out “Gold Guns Girls” may have damaged my voicebox, but it was totally worth it. The last song was an acoustic version of “Gimme Sympathy”, with the whole crowd singing along, and Emily quipped that we should all really be around a campfire. And if I may add to that, her quipping was really excellent - “You all get to sleep in your own beds tonight! I’m jealous. I’d love to sleep in your beds.” Queue impassioned screaming.
In summary… great, great concert. And I love Emily Haines even more than I already did, which I didn’t even know was possible <333
(although to be fair, Jimmy Shaw is smoking too. I’d never really noticed this before last night but NOW I HAVE, OK. alright. Now I’m out.)
Just to add some things…
Those legs put me in a daze. Anyone who has fallen under the spell of Emily Haines’s legs will understand.
Anyway, the opening act was intriguing when it started (I liked the percussion and would listen to that first song again), but overall was “meh”, on account of us hardly being able to hear the vocals.
But back to Metric… The best bits were Dead Disco*/Stadium Love (ooohweeeoohhhweeeooooh, yep that’s how that bit goes), Lost Kitten, Help I’m Alive, Empty, Monster Hospital, and acoustic Gimme Sympathy, which was the final song of the encore. It was all over so fast! I think Help I’m Alive was the crowd favourite? Maybe…Also I feel like there wasn’t enough love for Lost Kitten. Then again it’s pretty new.
The other Best Part was when Emily Haines came over to our area and our hands touched and it felt gooood. You do not know what being this close to Emily Haines does to a person.
* I’m streaming that 15-minute version right now. But any and all Dead Disco is great regardless of length, pretty much.
